We recently highlighted changes to Illinois law that allows adults who were adopted to obtain their original birth certificate. While the law provides important rights for those who were adopted who want to learn the story of their birth and how they came to be adopted, one little girl will have quite a story to hear about when she learns of her own adoption.

A couple in South Carolina became the foster parents to a baby girl. The baby had previously been shuffled from one foster home to another, but the couple instantly fell in love with her.

A short time later, the husband learned that he had cancer. As he fought the disease, his one wish was to adopt the baby before his time was up.

A sympathetic judge and lawyer cleared the way. In July, while sitting in his recliner at home, the husband happily learned the adoption was finalized. He was now legally the girl's father. Sadly, just minutes later he passed away.

While the 11-month-old baby girl gained and lost her new father quickly, she gained a loving home and became not only the father's last joy, but also the mother's continuing solace. The mother says that she wakes up the baby and her perpetual smile helps her cope with her own grief in losing her husband. Although the holidays were particularly difficult this year, the baby has given the woman great joy.

While the adoption is a bit unusual, it appears that the baby has found a loving home. In Illinois, the finalization of an adoption is typically a treasured moment in a family, as well as for the people who helped make it happen.
