Helping Families Grow Through Adoption

The family law attorneys at Murphy & Dunn, P.C. have experience with several forms of adoption.

Stepparent Adoption

If you would like to adopt your new spouse's children from a previous marriage or relationship, we can help you with stepparent adoption. In these cases, the other biological parent must agree to give up his or her parental rights and obligations. If the other parent objects to the adoption, we can seek to terminate parental rights in cases where there is cause to do so. Next we will proceed with the adoption process, which involves a home visit and interview by a social worker.

Relative Adoption

Adoption by a grandparent or other family member follows a similar pattern. We have represented clients whose young daughters have become pregnant and agree to having their parents adopt the child. We've also helped grandparents adopt children whom they have raised in the parents' absence.

Private Adoption

Our attorneys represent individuals and couples who are seeking to adopt a child. We also represent the rights of pregnant women who would like to place children for adoption. In these cases, we can work in partnership with an adoption agency or directly with the parties involved.

Adult Adoption

Our lawyers are available to perform adult adoptions. These adoptions happen when a person over the age of 18 is adopted by another person or couple. Adult adoptions can happen to establish inheritance rights or to legally formalize a relationship that has been like a parent-child relationship.
